Peugeot gearbox problems

Hi all
I have just had a spare gearbox rebuilt and have reinstalled it into the car this weekend.
However....it appears to be stuck in fifth gear. The gear lever won't move into 5th position, nor can I get the box to go into fifth by manually moving the levers on the box itself. Worse, it is in gear even when neutral is selected.
If I select another gear and raise the clutch, the engine stalls - my thinking is that if fifth is already selected then choosing another gear effectively locks the box solid.
Any quick cures for this or is it another box-out job...

make sure the 5 gear has been put on the correct way round this will cause this problem.
You should be able to remove the end cover in situ and check.
..for your reply. I've been in touch with the gearbox builder and he is coming over tomorrow night to fix it. If I understand it correctly, it was a problem with the synchro ring assembly not being correctly aligned.
