Newbie (hopefully)

Hello. I came along to the X-part to have a look and to try and pursuade the wife that Endurance Rallying would be fun.
Couple of questions
1) Other than the 6 rounds of the Endurance Rally Championship, are there any localish (am in Billericay) events that the car would be suitable to enter ? Am guessing the Thetford (Preston) would be ok ?

2) There is a blue MG ZR up on ebay for sale (i saw it in the X-part but gather it broke the diff post the stage i came to watch). Thinking that might be a good bet to get started

Re licenses etc, i think (from reading other posts) that I just need club membership rather than a pukka license ?...is that also true for the Preston ?

Many thanks
Simon

I'll do my best to answer

I'll do my best to answer these:

1) Targa Rallies would be a good place to start as an introduction to tests / diagrams etc and will see you working together as a crew - you may have seen the forum posts and seen CMC ran one yesterday. There is another on 19th May run by West Suffolk - regs due out soon. You need to be a member of the organising club to compete.

CMC run a series of 12 Cars [details elsewhere on this website] and they're a good "training ground" for the night rally aspect of Endurance events. For these you need to be a member of an invited club, so CMC membership would suffice as the organising club. Events are held all over Essex and if you're not familiar with navigating there's a training night this coming Thursday [again, see post elsewhere on this forum!].

To compete on Endurance events, you will each need a minimum of a Non Race National B licence [yes it's called Race, but will cover your for certain levels of rallies too]. The price is around £37 - I've lost touch - and you don't need to take any tests, just fill in the form [available on the Motorsport UK website] and pay up. Some Endurance events run "clubman" rallies alongside the endurance events. In essence, this gives you a chance to try an Endurance event without having to have the licence etc. I can't recall if you need to be a member of the organising club OR an invited club.

The Preston is a National B Road Rally and organised by CMC - because it's a Nat B Rally, both crew members will need a non-race Nat B licence, as per the above. I would suggest for both The Preston and Endurance events that you speak to competing crews because a well prepped car will be worth a lot.

Hope that helps - so in essence, if you're not a member of Chelmsford, a £10 membership will cover you for a lot of what you want to do this year, but you may need a non-race Nat B licence too.

Hi Simon

Hi Simon

The XPart is the most local endurance event to you. I would however suggest you and your wife take part in a few 12 cars and Targa's before competing on the Xpart and the Preston. You do not need an Motorsport UK licence for 12 cars or Targa's but you do for the Preston and XPart. You will still need a club membership card though.

The 12 cars will help you on road navigation, correct route and road timing while the Targa's will help you on navigating the correct route around the tests hopefully without picking up penalties. Both forms of rallying are cheaper to compete on while learning. You should be ready then to compete on the XPart next year.

There is a navigational night this Thursday at Chelmsford Rugby Club for 12 car beginners as we have quite a few beginners competing and 2 rounds left of the 12 car season.

Next targa is May 19th at Carver Barracks run by West Suffolk Motor Club.

You don't need an endurance car to compete in 12 cars or Targa's so take your time to choose the right endurance car for you.

There will be quite a few members at the next club night as its our AGM so pop down and have a chat. We will be showing the brands hatch stages as well.

Hi Justin. Congrats on getting a car. It wasn't the blue one with yellow wheels from Ludlow by any chance?
Be interesting to know how things go. Waiting on annual bonus to see if there are enough funds to convince the wife I can get a car !

Good luck

April 12 Car

Hi Jon

As the April route is that of the cancelled January event you should only need 167, which you already had for the Derek Stone.

Cheers

April 12-Car

The regs for the 12-Car on 26th April will be published around Easter. The route will be as planned for the cancelled Jan Jaunt, ie start at Epping Golf Club and finish at Birchanger Sevices. If you entered for the Jan event, sorry but new entry forms will be required and with payment please! (Saves time etc at signing-on.)
Classic Mini's especially welcome. Come on Seumus, Jim, Luiz, Paddy, Rauno, Timo, Russell, et al. (List in order of preference.)
Quiz time - the first person who can give the surnames, correctly spelt, of the last four in the list will get a lovely bag of choccies to munch during the event. Competitors, marshals, now's your chance. Answers here.

Hopkirk
Aaltonen
Makinen
Brookes

I must admit I had to Google the last one... the other ones I'm pretty sure they are the correct names unsure on the spelling!!

I am happy with securing a place on the entry list instead of the chocolates Wink

Well done Colin, a bag of choccies for you! Commiserations Luiz, but I can understand your Finnish being a bit slow!
Paul, I used to read Motoring News from cover to cover in the 60's and 70's, and I once bought some Mini spares from Russell Brookes in his early days of rallying and long before the Mexico series. Those were the days....(yawn).

That was close....

At work at lunchtime I could not get my forum password correct, so I had to wait until I got home, so it was a blind panic to put the posting on as soon as I got in.

Colin, you only just made it! Perhaps I should give a bag to Luiz as well seeing it's obvious you both have a sweet tooth and raced to get your answers down. Perhaps I should give first prize to Luiz seeing that Finnish is not his mother tongue.
Strange logic going on here but that's normal for someone who delights in devising devious route cards for 12-cars!

Russell Brookes

I think Russel Brookes is the only one of the four to have competed on a Chelmsford Motor Club event - the 1971 Britvic Rally I think (I inherited from Nigel Booth a while ago the secretary's box of club papers and it includes a copy of the programme for that event). I'm sure Jim or someone will tell us where he finished as I don't have the results.
