Miglia Quadrato - 7/8th May

The Miglia Quadrato is a unique all-night treasure hunt in the City of London that many club members have competed on. With entry numbers dropping in recent years, the future of this event is in doubt. If you want to preserve it, then enter now and do your bit in attracting new entrants.

Regs are here:http://chelmsfordmc.co.uk/cmc/Invited/16/MQREGS16.pdf

Get your entries in by the 23rd April at the normal entry fee, although antries will be accepted up to the 30th.

Bob Blows is a frequent competitor, and can provide training or advice on how to do well on the event.

The Miglia Quadrato is an Endangered Species - we need YOU!

This is your opportunity to be part of a legend, for the Miglia Quadrato is indeed worthy of the title. There is no other event like it in the country, probably in fact in the World, it is a unique competition. A navigation scatter rally in the centre of one of the World’s great cities in the middle of the night. There really is no other event like it. However, like all good things this might not go on forever! The regular organisers have now organised it for well over 40 years, so this might be their last; but of course a bumper entry will persuade them to carry on!

If you have competed before you will know how much fun this event is, and if you haven't then your life is not complete! – You must give it a go. This is the year to drag out the “old teams” or create new ones. If the Stones can still put on great concerts at their age there is no excuse for anyone not trying the Miglia out.

Phone a friend, or better several friends, and a get a team together - after all what is one sleepless night in a lifetime? If you have not competed before and do take part I assure you that it will be the fastest passing 5 hours of your life. Many of those who now take part are long standing competitors who come back year after year. As one ‘regular’ said “I first did this event in 1974 when road rallying was suspended due to the fuel crisis, loved it, and have never missed one since”… that’s the only recommendation you need!

For new entrants: The Miglia requires much of the skill and supplies much of the fun of normal rallying with very little expense. Anything (roadworthy) on four wheels will be serviceable and even your Lamborghini will use little more than a gallon of petrol. The Miglia is an all night “treasure hunt” - without any navigation tricks or rough roads!

This year’s event will be suitable for newcomers, but still difficult enough to challenge the experts (there will be no “clean sheets”). In addition, most clues - once found - will be easy to read.

The unique quality of this traditional event is that it takes place entirely within the square mile of the City of London, with the knowledge and kind co-operation of the City of London Police and the Corporation of the City of London.

The object is to answer the questions given on the route card, the location of an answer being defined by the map reference attached to each question. If these references are plotted accurately, the answers are easy to find (of course, some are easier than others), and there is thus the fascination of rallying on a 1:10000 scale map (approximately 6 inches to the mile) - on which it is possible to plot within 5 metres or so - instead of the more familiar 1:50000 (1 inch/mile) maps.

To encourage newcomers we hope to arrange a team at the start to advise on how to plot references and so on - in fact to answer any questions that you may have.

The Event starts from Midnight on Saturday, May 7 th and finishes around 5 a.m. on Sunday. Final Instructions - which will also act as acknowledgement of entry - will be sent to all entrants in the week preceding the event, together with an accurate romer (to plot the references).
