I have been waiting for someone else to answer this , but the event organisers are seriously busy organising this weekends event.
Seeding is mainly based on the speed of the cars on early ( say top 6 ) representative length sections on preceeding years Prestons. This is to minimise catching. If you are quick on the sections but rarely finish you will still get a good seeding. If you are a steady driver setting 15th to 20th times at the beginning of the rally, and perhaps finish 5th but rarely setting top 10 section times, you may get seeded in the 20's to 30's amongst cars of a similar speed the next year. You wont get caught , but you wont catch people. That is the theory.
If you are good but have never done The Preston the organisers will rely on seeding info.but as no event is like the One and Only it is a difficult job. You can never keep all the people happy all the time. Winning The Preston will get you a good number.
The top 30 cars want to be seeded in the top 10, and none of them want to be in the top 5!
Most of them have set top 10 times in the early sections at some point in their Preston careers. It is quite a strong field this year, even if a few recent winners are missing.
Congratulations to the award winning CMC crew members, particularly those that filled the Top 4 overall places .
It was a close fought battle at the front with Stefan Taylor ( son of a past winner David Taylor) navigated by Adrian Gladwin ( a 2 time previous winner and former C of C) taking victory on the final section, after Owen Turner dropped 5 minutes with a puncture.
37 crews made the finish out of 54 starters. The rally ran very slickly with a full turnout of marshalls and the organisers can be very proud of putting on a great event.
I meant to make a pun that Geoff Lobb ( assisted by Tony Burchnall ,and Hayden + 1 ( Luis help me with the names here)) actually Cleaned Up , after The Preston! 2000 items were prepard by Geoff- including stickers/staples / tape arrows stakes . Geoffs team cleared the sections , dual handed, that were set up by 9 crews on the Friday - a simply massive workload for which due praise has appeared on facebook..
magic.
