We had a Winter Series organisers meeting a few days ago and agreed dates, organisers and plans for running the whole AMSC Winter Series as a joint effort between Eastern Counties, West Suffolk and Chelmsford. I will run the 1st Oct event in the Chelmsford area - details to follow soon, with entries opening early September. Event format will be very similar to pre-pandemic but using electronic signing on. We aim to cover all events with real marshals rather than using GPS timing. Other dates are:
Preston's had a fuel delivery last night and will be open during the day but will close the pumps at 7pm to avoid any congestion between the public and our cars. Queueing seems to be easing and other fuel stations in west Chelmsford are stocked, notably the BP station on the A1060 just west of Chelmsford - crews arriving later than 7pm should try there but are advised to leave home with plenty of fuel.
Thank you to all those who supported last night's 12 car - the first event for nearly two years. Quite a few cobwebs were blown away, especially on the first section (which no one cleaned and only three crews found the first board, despite being defined by only three map references for just over four miles).
The marshals and helpers were:
Paul & Peter Brewerton - Start and Course Closing (for most of the route), Jim Bowie & Katie Andrews (making her debut as a navigator before this month's JJ Targa) - Course Opening - and marshals Andy Merchant, Tony Michael, Kelly Radley, Mike Rosewell, Lee & Suzanne Earthy (who also allowed us to use the start venue), Mark and Sam Andrews and Allison Ward (time control in their front garden near High Easter).
Thoroughly enjoyed the bit we did before a pot hole wrecked 2 tyres and ended play - we will be talking about the trip back home for years to come! Thanks to all who organised or in any way let us play, it's been far too long! If anyone has any old navigation they can send us to practice on please let me know as I'm keen to encourage youthful enthusiasm!
It really was fantastic to be back out on an event that was like it used to be pre-covid. Thank you to Paul and others involved in organising, and to all of the lovely marshals - having marshals at time controls does make it a more friendly event as we make our way round! And to be able to have a nice chat with everyone in the pub at the end was good too.
Blowing the cobwebs away took most of the event, and I lacked a little confidence in my own plotting on the last bit so quite a bit of learning for me (along with finding out that a different travel sickness tablet really doesn't work!), but wonderful as always to have Luis in the driving seat, providing the encouragement and calmness. (And thanks to those who helped with car diagnosis at the start!)
Congratulations to Ben & Steve in particular, but also to everyone else for getting out and having a go, especially the youngsters.....it is great to see a couple of other young people joining us and I hope we'll see more of you in the future :)
Paul, many thanks to you and all the marshals for our first taste of 12 Car in 2021. It certainly blew away the cobwebs. Great variety of roads in a compact area and some testing navigation.
Congratulations to Ben and Steve and I hope the crews that suffered punctures made it home not too late.
