Hi, we broke a CV joint on our Peugeot 205 1.9 at the Abingdon Carnival stages, and I was wondering if anyone can help with recommendations for replacements that may last a bit longer. This was the 4 event that we had used this drive shaft.
The car has a BE3 gearbox with LSD and standard wheel hubs.
any help and advice will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Rob
Thanks Mac, I will have a look.
Cheers
Rob
Just a quick double check. You are using 1.9 shafts and hubs are you? The 1.6GTi's are smaller. You can spot this easily because the 1.9's use a ~36mm hub nut with an "R pin / split pin". The 1.6's use a ~30/32mm nut with a staking ring.
Just a thought.
Hi,
You have got me thinking now. The ones in the car at the moment did not have split pins, just the staking nut. The original ones did, I thought this strange at the time. I also had too buy the 36mm socket to get them off, but I have a feeling I did not use this to refit. I have not had time to look at them yet since we got back from Abingdon, but I will double check tonight. I think you could be right. I did get the shaft off of ebay so it very well could be the wrong one.
Thanks
Rob
Hi,
I checked the nuts last night and they are smaller than 36mm, about 34mm, but bigger than my 32mm socket. The originals ones definably where 36mm as they are a snug fit in my 36mm socket. I am going away the weekend, but I want to check the near side shaft as well, so if its OK with you I will let you know if I need both shafts next week.
Thanks
Rob
Hi Mac,
That's a great price. I would like both shafts, The left hand one looks OK, so I think I will keep as a spare. So I would need the RH shaft with exchange and the LH shaft without exchange,
Whats the best way to proceed, I could come over during the week.
Rob
Hi Mac,
Just to let you know I have fitted the RH drive shaft, and at the same time discovered that the ball joint in the wish bone has a lot of play in it, this may have contributed to the shaft breaking. I have tried to fit the LH shaft but it seems to be about 3 mm to long even under full compression, and I can't refit the ball joint. it also has the castle nut for the split pin, (the RH shaft didn't). Do you think this may be a 309 shaft? The shaft that came out goes back in with ease, any thoughts, really appreciate your help.
Thanks
Rob
I had similar problems with my 1.6 GTi. Peugeot seemed to use anything which came to hand and I had four different shafts from GSF before we found the right one. We even had shafts wrongly labelled which didn't help. The correct bit was only found by comparing new with old in their warehouse, so don't give the original back until you have the right replacement.
Ipswich GSF were magnificent and finally sorted it. It was very trying for everyone concerned though, because they had no idea of the problem themselves.
Cheers Mac, and thanks for the info Tony.
I roughly measured the shafts later this evening and it appears that the original shaft is 600mm and the new one seems to be 605mm. very strange.
Thanks
Rob
Thanks Mac,
My nearest branch is Thurrock, but its no problem for me to come over to the Chelmsford Branch if it keeps things simple, I am heading that way on Friday and Monday so not a problem. Sorry to cause you this hassell.

Hi Mac,
The number is 438PC00750 245134, it also says application to Citroen. One the other box with the RH that fitted it said Application to Renault.
575mm sounds way to short, the one that came out is definitely roughly 600mm.
Rob
OK will do. Just to confirm the shaft in the box is about 605mm long. I have checked that the oil seal is located properly and the old shaft just slots in and out, so I am sure that this one is just that fraction to long. Could it be because i think the gearbox has the 1.6 final drive or something? I will give you a ring tomorrow and have a chat, I can always pop over on Friday with the other shaft if necessary.
Cheers
Rob
