Jan Jaunt 12-Car Rally 2012

Now The Big One is over and when we've finished washing, straightening and repairing, we can begin to think about the next 12-Car.
The Jan Jaunt is on the 27th and we are hoping to start at a new venue close to the M25/M11 intersection for a run through the Essex lanes for about 50 or 60 miles. The regs will be published here at the end of the year or early in January. Can't guarantee a warm evening such as we just had on The Preston, but some new roads and variations of some previously used should make for an enjoyable evening's motorsport.
As always we will need marshals for 7 or 8 controls so we will be contacting the usual suspects, but if you want to volunteer, that would be much appreciated!

Jan Jaunt 12-Car Rally - regs and entry form

I see from Jim Bowie's post that Tony Michael is busy with the results service for the London to Cape Town, which might explain why the Jan Jaunt regs are not up yet.
Crews wishing to enter the Jan Jaunt can email me and I will reply with the regs and entry form:

.

Went up to the H of P to see the London to Cape Town crews leave, and it's good to see Owen and Matt in the lead as they leave Italy. The other two CMC crews are doing ok too, Richard and Rob in the top ten and the Dawsons in 11th place. The event website is good, you can follow the cars on satellite tracking.

Jan Jaunt 12-Car, refreshments available at start!

The start and finish venue is the club house of The Essex Golf Course, MR 465008.5. The club is run by CMC members Neil and Gay Sjoberg and they are kindly laying on a pot of soup, french bread and sandwiches for us, as well as tea, coffee and drinks. Thanks guys, much appreciated!

Please note that there is no exit from the M25/M11 intersection on to local roads.

5 entries received already! Entry list will be posted soon.

Even more Minis...

As well as running the Spitfire, we also have a 1970 Mini in the family (it's my son's really) which should be finished by the Spring. I did warn him I might take it for a Friday night drive around "Chelmsford or somewhere...." when it's done, to help run in the new engine and bed-in the trick suspension and brakes.

Jan Jaunt 12-Car, marshals needed please!

We still need marshals for 3 or 4 controls - please help if you can!
Also, it would help a great deal if we had a crew to do course-closing duties (and also man TC1).
Please volunteer if you can, without your help we can't run the event!
Please contact Andy or Chris, our contact details are in the regs.

Many thanks in advance.

I've not got mine yet but i'm sure your 12 car entry will be Ok if you know that the club has received your membership form and money.
I'm not great at this navigating lark and we are in the expert class which has more tricky navigation so tell the missus not to worry too much .

great!!!

Hey Darryl

We finished in 10th place with I believe 7 fails and 21 minutes dropped, I think it's not bad as first timers!! If we also add that the Mini wasn't ready until just an hour before the start of the event due to a carb problem and the socket we fitted as power source for the poti wasn't working either...

It was a great way of ending a long week at work, a very friendly (but competitive!) atmosphere and a fantastic route.

Things to improve on our side is definitely the in-car organization... I take my hat off to navigators in general, and particularly Sofia for, despite not feeling very well before the start, doing a fantastic job!! oh, she needs to start reading the road as well and not only the junctions... a couple of nasty bends almost caught us, haha!!!

I loved it and can't wait for the next one!!

Thanks Andy and Chris and all Marshals for a fantastic event.

Great first event

Luis, for a first event in the dark with limited experience you did rather well from what I can make out!

I know from going out with Matt on the gymkhana that I was always calling something out (although he didn't hear me a couple of times!!!!)

Were your fails codeboards and passage checks, as these are the ones to keep your eyes open for.

Still waiting for my first event in the drivers seat, but hopefully that wont be far away.

Will hopefully start on NiKoLas soon, as the garage loft has been finished and I now have space to put all the stuff that is blocking access to him.

I'm hoping to get the A-panels off in the next week and strip down the engine bay for the scuttle repair and front end re-paint!
Then we'll turn him round for my 2 weeks off in feb to do the back end, watch this space....

Darryl.

Thanks

Thanks Andy and crew, another excellent event on Friday night. We really enjoyed this one and was able to keep to to a reasonably good time - shame we missed 3 boards. But it was good fun and some good roads there.

Luis - we were behind you for a bit and you seemed to be getting along pretty well in the Mini, and a good result for your first event - well done. The Mini smelled as though it was running a bit rich though; maybe your carb problem you mentioned?

Course Closers Comments

Andy - it was a great route plenty to keep the crews on their toes! The roads around Navestock and Abridge are where I cut my "lanes in the dark" teeth in 1971/2 , not to mention the scene my first ( of many! ) gentle "off" just by Howefields Farm.that was in my Wolseley 1500 complete with halogen headlamps, 6 (yes 6) Lucas halogen spot lamps and an alternator to power them! ( being a Lucas Service apprentice had some advantages)
That wasnt rallying we just used to go to the country pubs!

We were impressed that Half the field were "classics" and the rest were modern classics as far as road rallying is concerned.
We had a good run in the Rover - I could not help thinking about the CMC guys on the London to Cape Town ! What a feat!

For those Mini nuts in the club - Have a read of the book called " A Little Goes A Long Way" A great read.

See you on the next one - we might even get Dolly out to play!

Echo the thanks to all

Echo the thanks to all concerned as above. Probably our best CMC 12 car to date, certainly reflected in our result!

Darren is starting to have success in plotting on the fly and I'm starting to concentrate on the directions he is giving me rather than getting to the next junction and having to say "was that right or left?"

Our night was marred only by the Dolly almost needing a "splint" - on quite a few of the narrow lanes with potholes or a slight hump in the middle, the subframe and exhaust were grounding badly due to the knackered front shocks. They got took off the car yesterday and will be sent away for rebuild! This slowed us down a fair bit, along with my worries about a slightly leaking water pump and a non functioning temp gauge (gauge fixed, water pump job planned) it may even have cost us 1st overall.

Ah well, that's rallying!

Many thanks for all the kind comments about the Jan Jaunt, glad you all enjoyed it!
Will put up the results list on Monday evening, and congratulations to the award winners. The awards given out were very popular but if you would like a plaque to go on the mantlepiece as well then please let us know.
We would also like to thank again all those who marshalled for us - Ed and Rich, David and Elizabeth, Colin, Sue and Bob, Paul and Peter, Ken, and Brian and co.
Sorry about the herringbone, it didn't work for one or two crews, but when I saw the very short yellow covered by a grid line just south of Hatfield Heath I knew I had to use it! Rally organisers have to be devious sometimes!
Congratulations too to Luis and Sophia on their first 12-car, and in a 998 mini - great result, brilliant! And thanks also to the two experts crews who managed to finish 11th and 12th. When this happens we know we got the navigation right!
Thanks also to Neil for letting us use the club house as a start and finish venue, and to his staff for keeping the log fire burning.

12 Car crews should have a go at 20/20s

If you are enjoying our 12 Car rallies and have graduated beyond raw novice status then you should have a go at the Kent 20/20 rallies. These are basically long 12 car events with more controls and a larger field (20 of each in fact) - essentially half-way between a 12 car and a road rally.
There are some cracking lanes in Kent.
You can do them on a CMC club card and only need to buy a few Kentish maps (or maps of Kent). Have a look at the thread on this webiste.

All welcome in Kent

It would be good see some CMC crews venture south for this event.

The navigation has been designed to be easily understood by all abilities and is not in any way cryptic. Accuracy will be required but not an encyclopeadic knowledge of obscure clues. Our aim is to keep competitors moving so they can enjoy the route. We hope the nature of the Kent lanes will provide a result.
There are 3 sets of navigation available, Expert, Novice and Absolute Beginner.

Absolute Beginners will be given a combination of pre-plot and marked maps.
Novices will have straight forward navigation including the location of all the Time Controls.

The start venue is the M2 Services which is approx 20 mins from the Dartford Crossing.

Maps needed are 178 D3_ and 189 D3, both available for under a fiver from http://www.dash4it.co.uk

Herringbone help!

Andy/Chris/someone...

In the cold light of day I still cant make this herringbone work, can someone talk me throught the first bit to the 55 spot height?

What I have is -
Leaving TC5 I have three "lefts", which take me left onto the A1060, miss the immediate yellow on the right, and then first left in Hatfield Heath...
And then I have a "right", which means I miss the yellow heading south from Hatfield Heath (with a 55 spot on it)
...and now i am back doing a left in Hatfield Heath...

Presumably we were meant to end up on the road south from Hatfield Heath (with the .55 on it) ?

You mention a yellow on a grid line, where is this?!

Any help gratefully received!!!

I think you may have missed the short yellow at 530142 to Gibsons. It's short and covered by the grid line, but it is a yellow! You're not the only who had trouble with this.

Hi Andy

Thanks, yes I can see the road you mention at Gibsons.

I have to say on my printed map with a magnifying glass (!) and an online one here (http://wtp2.appspot.com/wheresthepath.htm) , it looks white and not yellow :)

Still, we went the right way eventually!

Had a quick look on the OS website and it is a white on the latest version by the looks of it.

Never mind, we were lost and out of it a long time before that!

Very useful, allows you to zoom in until a grid square is about 5 inches square, but watch out for moving and changing spot heights!

I wouldn't worry too much about that yet - the last two events of the Winter Series (March & April) will probably use the older version and when I run the Preistley in September I'll check the nav to both versions - so £8 for at least three events is not bad going.

It was a C2 underlined i was looking at, which was the one I used on the night.

I have an older 167 (pre C2) here, and on that one it has dashes for a footpath on that little bit of road as well!
