Priestley 12 Car Rally - 14th September

The regs for this year's Priestley 12 car rally are published. You can express your interest in marshalling or competing by replying to this forum thread, but only proper entry forms with actual money will count as real entries. Last year I very nearly cancelled the event when it only had a handful of entries the week before, but ended up with 10 runners so please don't leave it too late as I will draw the line on the 7th September.

The route will be around 50 miles on 167 / 168 starting in Little Baddow, near Chelmsford.

Priestley Rally - practice

I would recommend that all entrants for the Priestley should get some pre-event practice by entering the table top rally on 16th August at Chelmsford Rugby Club. The table top counts towards the new Winter Series championship - as we found this year competition is tight and every point counts; next April you might regret not entering!
I will be doing the tabletop and will be taking entries for the Priestley.

I believe Keith / Martin Lane are intending to enter.

Mike Thomas / Rich Baker are also looking at completing the car in time, so thats two more entries.

If any navigator is looking for a ride, I might also enter in the 106. Ben is at Rally GB, so be good to take out one of the newer navigators who want to gain some experience.

Priestley 12 Car - Insurance

I've managed to get a better deal on insurance than originally advertised. REIS charges £15 (Lockton who have previously been used at £20).
The regs have been amended and I'll refund on the night those who pay the higher fee.

I think future CMC events will be using REIS, who have always given us good service (we still remember the time about nine years ago when Richard Egger saved the East Anglian Classic from short notice cancellation when it became apparent a week before the event that the Motorsport UK's insurers had forgotten to renew their Master Policy). REIS also offers individual cover for competition cars which cover motorsports use- many regular competitors use this cover to avoid paying on-the-night premiums.

i'm back

I've been away on holiday for the last four weeks and it seems I've missed quite a few things, doing that table-top thing would've been great for us.
Sofia seems keen on having a go at the Priestley, if things change I've had a kind invitation by Ed to join him (did anyone tell him that I'm Spanish???)

Third option is to go out for a bit of marshaling...

In any case I'll see you on the 14th or at Brands Hatch next Monday.

Hola Luis

Welcome back!

The suggestion from Ed to give you and / or Sofia a ride on the Priestley could benefit both of you. Expert competitors can teach beginners a thing or two about rallying and doing a one-off 12 car with someone like Ed will be an education that should help you develop your competition skills.

Only two entries left!

I now have ten accepted entries with nine days to go before the list closes. Actual entry forms and payment are required to get an entry; promises on forums are not enough.
I still need a couple more marshals though.

As Mr Helm still has a garage full of broken Triumphs (we did quite a bit of damage to the engine of the TR6 up at RAF Woodbridge) then you can put me down for standing in a cold dark (probably wet) layby somewhere in Essex if you want.

He may of course decide to drag another one out if a vacancy appears....

Cheers

Rob,

Yes, unless anyone drops out then you are too late for an entry. I do need one more marshal post near Braintree, opens just before 9pm - don't forget you'll get points towards the Winter Series so it's worth making the effort. I'll contact you in the week to finalise.

bonnet decal

is the decal on the picture (see link below) acceptable on a 12 car rally? We've just come back from the Ardennes (Belgium) this weekend for a classic Mini navigational run, it has a number and the name of the event (not advertising...)

I'm happy(ish) to remove it for the Priestley but I thought about asking before Friday night as I don't want to make a mess of the paint job, I rather do it at home using some heat...

Louis,

Red tank tape is the best solution if it won't easily come off- we do need to enforce the no sign writing rule. Club stickers are OK but otherwise cars should be factory colour. The same applies to gymkhanas.

Sorry...

...can't come out on Friday night for the Priestley 'cos we're down in Wales marshaling on Myherin for the WRGB. Looks from the quick fill-up of the entry list that this season's 12-cars will be popular. Good luck to everyone, and see you all on the October event. Which reminds me we must start thinking about the Jan Jaunt which will likely start and finish in the Braintree area.

Priestley Results - updated with detail

Well done to all 12 crews who completed the event last night, and thanks to all the marshals. The route seemed to have been enjoyed by all and I think the nav was balanced about right. Well done to Scott Page for being the only navigator fail-free and navigating Ed Scott round to victory. Ellen & Colin were a very creditable 2nd overall, 1st beginner, missing just one board towards the end of the event. MIke Banks & Mark Rutter picked up 1st Novice award, missing out on 2nd o/a by drowning out in the Boreham ford (discovering in the process some interesting 'nightlife' for gentlemen) and picking up a make-up fail at the end of the neutral (lucky it was only 1F, we reviewed the Winter Series Regs last night and decided that future events should have 3F, consistent with missing or OTL at a time control). Further back were Dave & Jarrod Thompson 1st expert, following an overnight drive back from a Scottish holiday to get to the start in time, slippoing OTL at the last control.

1st Ed Scott / Scott Page,( N) - 0F 8m
2nd Ellen Tilney / Colin Sutton - 1B - 1F 10m
3rd Mike Banks / Mark Rutter - 1N - 1F 17m
4th Paul Dumbill / John Conboy - 2N - 1F 18m
5th Eddie Call / Adrian Bragg - 3N - 1F 22m
6th Keith Lane / Martin Lane - 4N - 2F 5m
7th Luis Diaz / Sofia Rodriguez - 2B - 2F 26m
8th Dave Thompson / Jarrod Thompson - 1E - 3F 17m
9th Matthew Marven / Craig mal de Marven - 2E - 6F 21m
10th Kevin Ablitt / John Hodgson - 5N - 6F 24m
11th Joe Philpott / Laura 'panic envelope' Palmer - 3B - 7F 0m

unclassified finisher - John Peterson / David Bell (Master) - 0F 12m

Priestley, thanks.

Thanks to Paul and all the marshals at the first 12 rally of the season. Well done to the winners.
We had a very enjoyable evening, Sofia did very well with the maps and I thoroughly enjoyed the lanes... I thought I was driving pretty quick just to find out that we were dropping time at every single TC!
We decided to plot the route at the pub so we had already dropped 5 minutes at TC1. I don't know how we missed the code board after the ford and I take the blame for the last one because I forgot to tell Sofia about the green dots...
I think we keep getting better at it and, hopefully, can grab a first beginner win at the next one.

Priestley Thanks

Thanks to Paul and team, another smoothly run 12 car to start the series.

It was only a few weeks ago I was looking for a navigator, so glad Scott came forward, an excellent result for him on his first event in the novice class.

Excellent route, so many smooth twisty roads on one event.

Been quite a while since I have competed on the 12 cars, but it was good to see they are so well supported and marshalled.

Maybe its a good time to ask if anyone wants to attend any navigational / 12 car training, just post on here. If we have enough interest we can easily organise something.

Well done to Edd and Scott for an anexellent performance.

More thanks

Organisers and of course marshals thanks for letting us have an entertaining Friday evening. On the basis that Ellen is much quicker than me I think I am going to have to get used to the left hand seat, so it is a great help that everything runs so smoothly and the navigation works. We had a good run and enjoyed it immensely. And I am so grateful now to be the proud owner of a genuine Don Barrow poti - even more happy with that than my first trophy on the maps.

Just a slight amendment to Paul's account above - our fail wasn't the NTC make-up, I used 8 minutes of penalty-free to get the route on the map there. We missed a board (and lost 9 of our 10 minutes) in a short excursion looking for a narrow yellow somewhere near Little Braxted.

Thanks again, great fun and we will be out in October.

Results commentary

Colin, sorry for the make up slur- story above now amended to avoid a libel case. Mr Banks in fact picked up said fail, costing them 2nd o/a as they otherwise picked up all the boards.

Very good 12 car

Well done Paul on a well organised first event of the season ,navigation was just right for my simple brain but unfortunately plotting it on the move around the twisty bits was too much for my pathetically weak stomache, by about two thirds round i had to give up .
Very nervous about going through the first ford ,however Matt pushed through without giving me a choice and all was OK. Perry Green to Coggeshall Hamlet is always a fantastic bit of road to drive and Matt had a huge grin on his face as we came to TC6 which made the evening worthwhile despite my poor performance.
