Tracing Car History - RS2000 SMX181R

Hi all - I received the email communication below from a David Berry trying to trace the history of an RS2000 he has purchased from Ireland. I originally thought of Dave Taylor & Tony Michael, for the late 80's / early 90's, then the Preston 2005 reference suggested Gordon Popplewell. Of course I could be wrong on all three counts! If anyone does have information that they wish to share, David can be contacted on

Hello Richard,

Sorry to bother you, but wonder if you can help me.

I have recently purchased a road rally spec car from Southern Ireland, the owner told me that he purchased it from the UK. There are references to your motor club on the car, a club sticker on the rear and a covered over sunstrip on the windscreen. I am wondering if you are able to put me in touch with its’ previous owner if they are known to you as i would like to try and get more in depth information on what the engine spec is meant to be etc.

The car is a 1977 RS2000, orange in colour with a previous Uk registration of SMX 181R.

If it helps there is a rally plate in the boot for The Preston 2005 and I am sure that there is a plate inside for course closing car for The Preston as well.
The car is basically running Historic road rally spec apart from the mods done in Ireland) and has HRCR stickers on it.

Best regards,
David Berry.
Droitwich,
Worcs.

I've just done a 'Jim Bowie' - looked up the Preston 2005 entries, and there it is Car 19 Gordon Popplewell.
