I agree with Suze, marshalling provides a great way to see 'inside' the event. It would be no problem to make sure that you were working with an experienced marshal so that any lack of experience not be a problem. The support would also be much apprciated. It would mean committing to the day however.
The reason most of our events don't allow spectators is that the single venue sites we use tend to be MOD and are usually active. Their security requirements mean they are very strict about controlling who has access, so they limit it to those actually participating or running the event.
We all started with zero experience once so don't think you would be out of your depth. We will make sure you aren't. From a potential competitors viewpoint it would be useful to see what goes on but also give you chance to meet folk who will then be familiar faces when you are a competitor for the first time.
A walk round the paddock at lunch could be an hour well spent.
There is an opportunity to marshal at Waterbeach near Cambridge next Sunday at the final round of the Anglian Autosolo Challenge. This will be a similar type of thing to the Targa Rally in November ( road cars and smooth tarmac ) which may be something you would like to start competing in next season.
We get the quickest drivers in the East of England.
Also, and this may be of interest bearing in mind your background, we share the venue with the All Wheel Drive Club who have a round of their Comp Safari Championship next weekend. Our HQ and theirs will be back-to-back so there will be a huge lot to see.
i like the sound of this , a friend of mine who also is looking to get involved with the club ( ex off roader also) would like to come and help out and maybe take a look around so if his free and its ok with you guys then there will be two pairs of willing hands ......if not i shall come alone, so were do i sign up or contact etc. thanks
It will be great to see you and you friend as well.
The venue is just off the A10 at Waterbeach, a couple of miles north of Cambridge.
From the A14 (Milton) turn take the A10 north to Waterbeach and Ely.
Turn right at the sign for Waterbeach Barracks down Denny Lane. There are traffic lights and an island in the road. This is, I think, the second right turning you come across.
Having turned down Denny Lane the turning to the airfield is about 80 yards on the left.
The gate will be manned by one of our people or someone from the AWD Club. Tell them you are marshalling on the Autosolo.
The gate will be open on Sunday from 0800 to 0930 so if you can get there by about 8.45 there should be plenty of time to get you settled in.
There will be a Burger Van available all day and we will give you a voucher for lunch but you may want to bring some nibbles along too.
Be prepared for any weather! In my experience airfields have their own climate which is comfortable on about three days per year.
Once at the airfield ask where our paddock is. The chap on the gate will know which arrows to follow. Signing on will be at a white van in the paddock so head there and introduce yourself to Brian Hemmings, Shaun Brame or me
Could you please let me know your name and that of anyone else you would like to bring with you. It's just to satisfy MOD that we know who is about. I don't need to know until Friday pm but it would be handy if you could email me at
.
See you on Sunday,
Tony. ( and if anyone else reading this would like to enter or marshal, please let me know )
so after todays great fun i would like to lend a hand marshalling this event to, still might be advisable to have some one look over my shoulder as i am still learning how the different events are run and i wouldn't want to cost some one time or points through me not doing it right ..... who do i speak to ? thanks chris
The chief marshal is Paul Ellis - paulrellis 'at' btinternet.com
Entries are looking healthy, the new Targa format with no skill tests and more relaxed vehicle regulations seems to be taking off. But the organisers do need a few more volunteers.
Really glad you enjoyed it today.I think having the 4x4 guys in the background added atmosphere (and sound). Paul Ellis is the right person to contact about the 11th at Woodbridge but you will likely not get a response this week as he is on holiday. You will certainly be very welcome on the day though.
cool, i shall drop him an email but maybe someone could let paul know when his back from his hols i am interested just in case the email don't reach him for some reason, thanks guys
Morning - it's a non-spectator event but you could marshal? You'll still get to see what happens that way!
i would do but i dont have any experience what so ever, would i not be more of a hindrance than help?
