Just looking through the regs for this, is 7.1.8 - the prohibition on petrol turbo cars - a CMC thing? As far as I can see the Blue Book does not prohibit them?
Yes it is - it comes from the old Gymkhana rules trying to be close to road rally rules. Although we allow any capacity turbo diesel to allow people to use their daily car.
Next year sees 1.5 litre petrol and diesel turbos allowed on road rallies, and 1.4 litre ones on endurance rallies, so I expect we should allow 1.5 petrol turbos on the Targas too.
... But we are happy with stage-prepared cars and have adopted the Targa regs on colours and advertising.
It is a bit of a pity because I have killed my Golf and replaced it with an A3 which is a 1.8T. I did look at the Blue Book before buying it and concluded it would be OK for 12 cars, 20/20s and Targas as R18.2.5 applies only to road rally permits. I guess I should have checked the old CMC regs as well.
I'll hold off on the Veyron then, perhaps have a look at the Gallardo instead.......
Adding the required stage safety gear doesn't change a car's eligibility for road rallies in any way - many of the endurance road rally cars do some stage events too. A committee member with a Group-N Evo did point out that a 2 litre petrol turbo limit would allow his car to do Targas, so that would be too far to go.
No issue with the stage cars at all Tony, my point was that the interior stripping, perspex windows and some other features are banned on road rally cars (with a view to making them more standard-looking) but we welcome them on Targas. Which I think we should.
But if I want to use my completely standard, everyday, not very exotic, road car on a targa then I can't because it has a turbo and runs on petrol. Which is a bit odd when I can turn up in a Gallardo, or a full house NA WRC car, or even some humungous Audi TDi. Which seems to run a bit contrary to the principle of the Targa format being grass roots and to encourage more people to try competing.

What turbo car had you got in mind?

That Lambo will never fit between the cones!
